How it works

At Vitaleux, we want to be as transparent as possible, and that means being clear with you about what’s in our products. We are doing that by putting a visual badge on our products and product pages to show you what the cosmetic community are saying about the ingredients used in that product. We call this our EMC Score, standing for Excellent, Moderate, Caution Score.

We do want to make it clear that all our products go through all UK legal cosmetic regulations and are tested well before ever hitting our store. Even with an EMC score of Caution, the products are still completely safe to use, but if you have sensitive skin or only want to use 100% natural ingredients, that product may not be for you. If you ever have any questions about a product, feel free to reach out and we will be more than happy to help you out and answer any questions you may have.

  • We analyse each ingredient against UK/EU cosmetic regulations and independent safety databases (CosIng, COSMILE, EWG, Yuka, CodeCheck).
  • Ingredients are scored for:
    1. Hazard profile (allergenicity, irritation, toxicity at cosmetic levels)
    2. Exposure (leave-on vs rinse-off product)
    3. Transparency (are allergens listed separately?)
  • The scores combine into a 0–100 scale, where higher = safer perception.

85–100 = Excellent

  • No flagged allergens or only very low-concern ingredients.
  • Fully compliant with UK/EU cosmetic regulations.
  • Minimal irritation risk.
    Score Wording:
    “Rated Excellent — safe for use with very low risk of irritation or allergenicity.”
Moderate

65–84 = Moderate

  • Contains some fragrance allergens or commonly debated ingredients (e.g., Phenoxyethanol).
  • Fully compliant with UK/EU law but flagged by some independent sources.
    Score Wording:
    “Rated Moderate — safe for use, but contains fragrance allergens that may cause sensitivity in some users.”
Caution

0–64 = Caution

  • Contains multiple allergens, sensitizers, or ingredients flagged by independent databases as higher concern.
  • Fully compliant with UK/EU cosmetic regulations, but more likely to trigger irritation or debate.
    Score Wording:
    “Rated Caution — safe for use, but contains multiple allergens or debated ingredients. Not recommended for very sensitive skin.”

Example: Sundrift Refreshing Body Spray

Ingredients: Aqua, Polysorbate 80, Phenoxyethanol, Benzyl Salicylate, Coumarin, Hexamethylindanopyran, Hexyl Cinnamal, Limonene, Pinene, Tetramethyl Acetyloctahydronaphthalenes, Vanillin.
Score: 72/100 🟡 Moderate
Why: Safe and EU/UK-compliant. Contains multiple fragrance allergens (Benzyl Salicylate, Coumarin, Limonene, Hexyl Cinnamal, Pinene, Vanillin), which may trigger sensitivity in some users. Phenoxyethanol is within permitted levels.
